Our History

Farplants has the late Edward Back to thank for getting Fargro Plants started in 1972. As Technical advisor to Fargro Ltd, part of his remit had been to evaluate new business opportunities that might benefit its members. He had been attracted for a while to the expanding Garden Centre sector where plants were now being sold in pots all year round. However, the quality was generally mediocre or poor. Surely there was a way to change this?

He organised a meeting with 35 Fargro members to explain how they could grow and sell lots of high quality garden plants. 20 members were unconvinced and left, but the remaining 15 went on a fact find mission to garden centres and nurseries.

Finally, six stalwarts emerged at the end, they believed in the vision and invested resources, money and effort to make Fargro Plants a reality.

The new group sold its first plants in autumn 1972 and the first year’s sales amounted to £30,000. By 1997, sales had grown to £8 million. Today, the group produce over 11 million plants a year with a retail value of over £50 million.

The co-operative has worked together for over 45 years to provide outstanding plants to garden retailers throughout the UK.
